To the Island
A particular
figure has been on my mind for the last decade or so - an iconic form of a
walking man. I titled this body of work "To the Island" - a name that
came up in the process because questions come up: Who is he? where is he going?
There are partial answers: the man is sometimes more recognizable and sometimes
less so. We only see his back as he is walking away from us, but why? And where
to?
Some of the
answers are found in the title "To the Island". An island is a
geographical, a real, physical place. As a geographical place it has specific
characteristics: an area of land
surrounded by water, and perhaps, it is also isolated and remote.
In the background
"No man is an island" (by John Dunn) and maybe there is not such a
person after all.
