Artist comment

Sugar lift etching is a long process by which cooked sugar (like caramel) is used as ink on a copper plate. The caramel dries, and a stopping layer is brushed over it. Once this layer is dry, the copper plate is placed underwater for a day or two. The water melts the sugar, and the stopping layer is thus lifted and the lines are revealed.

The plate can now be immersed in the etching acid. Once the copper plate is etched with the sugar, and the lines are formed, aquatint may be introduced to create the gray areas.

Once the plate is ready to be printed, an oil-based printing paint is rolled over it, in this case, I used a mix of blue and raw sienna.

The element of surprise in inherent to the printmaking process.
